Most people do not realize Savannah's St. Patrick's Day celebration is among the largest anywhere, going back to 1824. The city dyes the fountains green, the squares fill up, and the parade runs for hours.
What makes it work is Savannah itself. Twenty-two garden squares under live oaks draped in Spanish moss, cobblestone streets down by the river, and antebellum architecture on every block. It is a beautiful city on an ordinary Tuesday, and this is not an ordinary Tuesday.
