Early October is the window for New England, and the timing is not an accident. That is when the color runs through the mountains, and a week either side is a different trip entirely.
What makes it work is everything the color happens to be draped over. White clapboard churches, covered bridges, stone walls running off into the woods, and village greens that have looked the same for two hundred years.
Four states in eight days sounds unhurried, and it is. New England is small enough that the distances between them are short. The distances are short and the driving is the good part, with the color coming at you the whole way.
